One of the activities in our drop in center is maintaining a garden and environmental hygiene to help children and youth learn about the importance of healthy nutrition, cleanliness and having a sustainable environment.
The children actively participated in environmental hygiene before our regular Saturday group session.
The kids and youth engaged in cleaning and maintaining our garden as they learned about conservation and team work.
Together they moved around the compound, careful not to harm the flowers and vegetables, as they picked dried leaves, dirt and tidied up the drop in center compound.
Outdoor activities that engage the children help them value team work, nature and their contribution in making where they live, learn and play a better place. They see that supporting each other in tasks is how they can build and improve their community.
Maintaining the garden also shows the kids how nutrition comes from nature that needs nurturing and growth. Our garden has different vegetables that are used in our healthy after school snacks.
We have corn, lettuce, spinach, mint, pepper, among others. We also have different flowers to brighten the our drop in center compound to make it a friendly place when children and youth visit.
Lemma, a young student with special needs, happily participated in the activities with the other youth. The children were proud of their contribution as they finished the activity.
